A good thing for obese children is FOS. FOS is the acronym for a chain of molecules your body can not digest. They pass through the stomach and into your intestines where beneficial bacteria and yeast (as opposed to pathogenic yeast or candida) feed on them.
You or your children may have an imbalance in beneficial gut bacteria or microflora if a history exists of:
- constipation, diarrhea or irritable bowel syndrome
- antibiotics or other drugs
- eating processed foods
- lowered immunity to fight off illness and disease
- bloating
- over weight or obesity
As more than seventy percent of our immune system resides in the gut, keeping the balance of good microflora in the gut only makes sense.
Many parents who are clients tell me that their children have been diagnosed with food sensitivities, allergies or yeast overgrowth. These also can be signs that healthy gut microflora is out of balance. The imbalance can be corrected through a natural process. After the microflora balance is reestablished, adults and children report improved digestion, elimination and boosted immunity.
Fructooligosaccharides are naturally occurring in Jerusalen artichoke, chickory, leeks, onions and garlic. They can also be found in common foods that feed pathogenic yeast or candida such as bananas, wheat and barley which are better avoided.
Reestablishing healthy gut microflora takes time and effort. You and your children can begin by eliminating processed foods, simple sugars and foods that are metabolized like simple sugars by the body. Afterall, who doesn’t want to feel better, get sick less often and have a healthier weight? My educated guess is your obese child.
