Much has been written about the link between the obese child and insufficient physical activity and fitness. But just why is it important for children to be fit?
As parents we can see the outside of our children’s bodies develop. This phenomenon happens because of the growth going on under the skin. Trillions of cells work in harmony to build bones, joints and muscles.
Running, jumping, leaping, climbing and slithering help to build the inner structure of a child’s body by challenging it to work harder and thus grow stronger. This results in building a stronger heart (which is muscle), healthier bones that give the body structure and protect vital organs, and joint flexibility for agility and balance to help prevent injury.
In addition physical activity will help your child have a more sound and restful sleep. Children of all ages who are more physically active are generally better able to concentrate, comprehend and participate in the classroom. As active children can take pride in their physical and educational strengths, they develop a stronger sense of confidence and self-reliance.
Physical activity helps to prevent childhood overweight and childhood obesity because it builds lean muscle mass and controls the mechanism responsible for fat storage.
Significantly, physical activity in conjunction with nutrient dense food and responsible lifestyle, can delay and in many instances prevent the development of adult diseases that show up more and more in children such as high blood pressure and Type II diabetes.
Read this if you are a parent more concerned about your kids’ health now to ward off their becoming the “obese child.”
